Dry Creek Vineyard 2010 Foggy Oaks Chardonnay, Russian River Valley
Once a year we gather with my buddies from college in a rustic cabin in West Virginia. There’s no electricity, no running water and no indoor plumbing. On the plus side, there are no emails from work and there is wine.
The first evening after our arrival in Seneca State Forest, our friends Flash and Lynn were in charge of dinner. They rustled up some delicious giant-sized chicken breasts cooked in the wood-stove oven. We enjoyed the meal outside under the swaying trees a few hundred feet from the Greenbrier River.
To pair up with this delicious meal, I grabbed our chilled bottle of 2010 Dry Creek Vineyard Foggy Oaks Chardonnay. Perhaps it is the fog that makes this wine special – it was a spot-on pairing with our tasty bird.
This is a delicate wine with lemony flavor bursts and notes of vanilla. There is a nice riff of minerality, too. It is barrel fermented with 85% malolactic fermentation, adding to a smooth texture with good body.
The DCV Chard expresses a cooler climate terroir, and the winemakers have let the fruit speak for itself without heavy-handed use of oak. It’s a solid Chardonnay from a world-class wine region for a paltry $20.
Full disclosure: We received this wine as a marketing sample.
