The Federalist 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Lodi

PXL_20210519_184128376What’s more American than baseball, popcorn, and a California Cabernet?

Take Me Out To The Vineyard

The Federalist wines have made their name by filling a major need in this country: a dependable rich Cabernet Sauvignon that provides good value at an eminently affordable price. The wines pay homage to our founding fathers and bottles are emblazoned with the likenesses of George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and – in the case of the wine we recently tasted – Ben Franklin.

The brand celebrates the revolutionary spirit of our country and the 2018 Limited Edition Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon will now be available as sports fans enjoy our national pastime: baseball.

Again this year, The Federalist will team up with the Chicago Cubs and will be featured at select Wrigley Field restaurants, stadium concessions and suites. Even if the Cubbies are taking it on the chin, fans will have an elevated experience, enjoying high quality vino at an accessible price.

A Perfect Popcorn Pairing?

We received a great tasting kit with the wine including a Yeti cocktail tumbler, a tin of Garrett popcorn, and a collectible Federalist baseball. I still think I swing a mean bat, but our baseball-themed tasting didn’t include an athletic display by me. Instead we opened the Garrett popcorn to munch as we enjoyed the Cabernet. Yes, I know this isn’t an ideal pairing, but anyone who has had Garrett’s knows that you can’t not eat it. The combination of cheddar cheese and caramel popcorn is simply incredible.

The Federalist is a good match for the ballpark and for summertime. It hails from the Lodi AVA and is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon. The remainder is Merlot and Cabernet Franc with some other red varieties as well. The limited edition wine has an ABV of 13.7%, which is actually less than the regular offering, which has alcohol at 14.9%.

The Federalist gets 15 months of aging in oak barrels, with 35% new. This ensures some nice structure, but without the heavy tannins. It’s a smooth Cabernet with fruit forward aromas and flavors of black cherry and light oak. Blackberry and vanilla also contribute to the flavor profile. The medium body means you can keep sipping even if your game goes into extra innings.

The wine is priced at $23.99. If you can’t make it to the ballpark, this would pair well with burgers and hot dogs on the grill. It’s time to play ball!

Full disclosure: We received this wine as a marketing sample.
