This white wine comes from Spain’s Castilla-La Mancha, the largest wine region in the world. It is produced by the San Antonia Abad Cooperative, a group of more than 800 families that harvest grapes in the wine district of Manchuela.
If you are looking for a unique variety, this is it. Macabeo (also known as Viura) is a white grape well suited for crisp wines designed to be consumed young or blended with other grape varieties. The grape withstands the hot climate of the region and is a key component in Spain’s well known sparkling Cava.
This is just what the doctor ordered if you are an ABC (anything but Chardonnay) person. The wine is light with medium acidity. It had floral and nutty flavor notes without being overpowering.
We found this to be a nice selection for unwinding after dinner. This is a straightforward but unique wine. Whereas an inexpensive bottle of Chardonnay is likely to evoke yawns, the Macabeo is more likely to have your guests say, “This is interesting. What grape is it anyway?”
Then you can practice your Spanish pronunciation and tell them it is your latest discovery from the land of La Mancha.
Full Disclosure: We received this wine as a marketing sample.
