Brandywine Country Club Wine Event Satisfies The Discerning Diner

Looking for a new wine destination in the Toledo area? Be sure to check Brandywine Country Club.

By Wine Correspondent Glorious T

New Owners, New Hot Spot

The timing was perfect; a wine tasting dinner, on our anniversary, right down the street from our home. We opted to visit Brandywine Country Club for the first time in many years. Of course, we had heard about its change in ownership, and their goals to reestablish the club as a hot spot for dinners and the social scene. Upon reviewing the Uncorked! events menu and wine pairings, we made a reservation. The room was pretty full, with good ambiance. We were seated at a table with two other, very friendly couples and began what would be a great evening of laughter and fun complemented with great food and wine. Alison from Berman Wines did a wonderful job of pairing the wines with each outstanding course.

Entertaining Eats

The evening began with seared sea scallops accompanied by caramelized pecan bacon and sweet potato puree, finished with lemon beurre blanc, toasted pine nuts, and Italian parsley coulis. This dish was simply decadent; the scallops succulent, sweet, with a little browning on the top. We were excited about the meal starting off with a very impressive course. The scallops were paired with Niner Sauvignon Blanc; the pleasant, slight acidity of the grapefruit notes made this course very enjoyable and highlighted the deep flavors in the dish.

On to the unusual mixed green salad with pasta, cucumber and prosciutto, dressed with basil mint vinaigrette. The slightly crisp pasta ribbon gave the salad a nice crunch. The flavor profile paired beautifully with Garnet Chardonnay. This wine has a beautiful, fresh citrus bouquet, very smooth with slight oak. Alison suggested tasting this a bit warmer to get a real review. We found this to be very drinkable and most at the table refilled their glasses.

The main course option was up next: grilled double lamb chops, served on smashed red skin potatoes with beets, pea puree and goat cheese crumbles, finished with blackberry syrup and a demi glaze hinted with fresh rosemary. This course was an absolute hit with the table. Mastering lamb chops is not easy, but the chef hit a home run. I chose the salmon option, and this was honestly one of the best filets I have had in a restaurant. It was hot off the grill, with a nice light charcoal flavor, well-seasoned and melted in my mouth. The meal was paired with 2014 Tangley Oaks Pinot Noir. Willamette Valley is a favorite appellation for the wine team, so we had high expectations and this selection was up for the challenge. It was the clear favorite of the table. The nose was fresh and full berries, with slight earth and white pepper. This medium bodied wine complemented both the red meat and the fish. Well integrated tannins and a long smooth finish made this wine easy to enjoy.

Dessert And… More Wine!

It was time for dessert. The menu listed, “Godiva infused chocolate mousse with mixed berries and fresh mint”. A pretty basic offering, right? That’s what we thought until it arrived. Not that we were expecting to be disappointed; you can’t go wrong with Godiva mousse. However, this mousse was truly a masterpiece. Rich flavor mixed to a perfect texture. We wanted more! When paired with the 90 point, Wine & Spirits “Year’s Best US Cabernet & Blends” honoree, Simi 2013 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, it was a taste treat. We savored every bite and every sip.

The wines were then offered at very reasonable prices, and everyone, including us, walked out with a few bottles. We had the opportunity to meet the new owners, Stanley and Kathryn Chlebowski and congratulated them on a wonderful event. We also met a few loyal members, who have been with Brandywine Country Club for plus years. They are excited about the direction the club is taking at this point. Our appreciation and congratulations go to Rachel Airhart, Andrew Riley (Marketing Director), and the chef and staff for a lovely evening, featuring truly outstanding food and remarkable wines. We will continue to keep Brandywine Country Club at the top of our list for fine dining, and we hear the casual dining is really good as well. We highly recommend you give them a try for an evening of cocktails, a fabulous Sunday brunch, dinner, of one of their many upcoming events. It’s great to have a place of this quality open to the public again. Cheers and best wishes to the Brandywine team for phenomenal success!

Wines of Meeker Vineyard Brilliant At La Scola Wine Dinner

The wines of Meeker Vineyard presented by Molly Meeker herself plus the cuisine of La Scola Italian Grille created an unforgettable evening.

From Junkyard to Vineyard

The journey of winery owners Charlie and Molly Meeker didn’t take the traditional route. Molly was an actress and Charlie was an entertainment attorney. They met at Norman Lear’s production company, which produced such shows as All In The Family, Sanford and Son and Maude.

Charlie became a film producer and ultimately president of MGM. Molly rose to a VP position in Lear’s company. In 1977 they bought a vineyard in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. In 1984 the Meeker Vineyards winery opened.

Imaginative Food Creations

The recent wine dinner featuring Meeker wines was presented by La Scola Italian Grill along with Esber Beverage Company. I enjoy drinking a great glass of wine, but to propel the occasion through the atmosphere, there’s nothing like scrumptious food. Having Molly Meeker there to discuss her wines was the cherry on top.

We tasted through five different wines paired with amazing dishes, the first being scallop bisque with bacon (I had no idea jowls were so crispy!). This was paired with the 2012 Meeker Dry Creek Valley Chardonnay.

The Chard offers a fresh bouquet. It is barrel fermented in neutral oak and is aged six months sur lee for additional body. It undergoes malolactic fermentation for a nice creamy finish. The bisque was rich and succulent and the chardonnay contrasted nicely. The chardonnay had an enjoyable vanilla finish. It’s a nice value at $25.

We were looking forward to the Meeker Cabs, but we weren’t there yet. First we enjoyed the 2011 Bessie Zinfandel. Dry Creek Valley is famous for Zin and Bessie did not disappoint. Well balanced with nice acidity, it maintained a light and bright profile. There was a dash of black pepper and it didn’t taste “hot” with high alcohol.
Paired with roasted bone marrow topped with red onion marmalade, this was a memorable and unconventional pairing.

The next offering was the 2010 Great Cabs Cabernet, Sonoma Valley. This was paired with a stuffed pork dish topped with wasabi micro greens and roasted red pepper. This is a mid-range cab which features small quantities of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It has nice body and great texture.

Molly described the Combination (code three) California Red Wine as a “down and dirty’ California blend. It has 60% Syrah, 20% Petite Sirah and 20% Barbera. This has a beautiful sour cherry flavor with a lilting acidity. It has some herbal notes and blackberry hints. It retails for $37. It was paired with slow-roasted poblano infused short ribs. Happy to say I received a bottle of this as a birthday present!

Hands Down Winner

The next bottle is “hands down” the most recognizable Meeker wine: the 2012 Winemaker’s Handprint Merlot, Sonoma County. The standard bottles bear the colorful handprints of winemaker Lucas Meeker. Also on display were a 3 liter bottle and a magnum.

The Handprint Merlot is a Cabernet drinker’s Merlot. It is robust and complex. It is 84% Merlot with the remainder being a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It explodes on the palate with cherries and red fruit with some toasty caramel.

This was paired with delicious lamb shanks and was divine. This has a SRP of $42 – an excellent bargain.

Chocolate Covered What!?

Our evening concluded with key lime pie with black pepper and chocolate doubloons paired with the 2013 FroZin dessert wine.  One of our dinner partners got me good on this one. I love chocolate and he said, “this chocolate doubloon is great.”

Mouth watering, I took a big bite – it was a jalapeno! Yikes! I enjoy jalepenos with beer and Mexican food, not so much at my wine dinner. Our friend Ann could not say enough about the jalepeno – at least not much I can repeat!

This was a playful finish to a truly magnificent evening of wine, friends and food. Meeker offers a great lineup of diverse wines, from elegant Chardonnay to Merlot with character. We encourage you to uncork at your first opportunity.

Charmed and Cherished Wine Tasting Continues Tradition of Good Times and Compassion

Article by Tasting Team Members Glorious T. and The Cabinator

The Cherished Friends of Ahava’s Charmed and Cherished Wine Tasting Event has been a favorite tradition for the Toledo Wines and Vines team since it began 12 years ago at Cousino’s Navy Bistro at the Docks. Since that time, the team has only missed a couple of the annual events, and it has grown to over 400 people filling Fifth Third Field’s suite level space.

We have met some great people along the way, and the supporters of the Cherished Friends of Ahava generally have a personal connection, and are a dedicated and enthusiastic group of people.

They have the coordination of this event down to a smooth and efficient production. The array of silent auction and basket raffle items was impressive, with many sought after items, including Ohio State memorabilia, spa treatments, gift cards, and vacation packages. Glorious T was unfortunately outbid on the oil painting of “your favorite pet”. A new carnival-like feature, “Ring Around the Wine” was a fun addition. For $5 you could throw a ring and win the bottle your ring landed around.

The buffet appetizer included a variety of tasty and savory options, along with an area of mini desserts. The food was substantial for those who were there to really sample the wines. The cost of $50 was a fair price. For sponsors of $100 or more, a “reserve” wine tasting was available. This had changed from a Reserve tasting of interesting wines to a small selection of mass market wines. The sparkling wine table included Piper Sonoma Brut, La Marca Prosecco, and a unique Rosa Regale sparkling red wine.

Meanwhile, Sara was featuring Mondavi Cabernet, La Crema Chardonnay, Davis Bynum Pinot Noir, and a very mineral focused Chateua Thunevan white Bordeaux. Sponsors also had, in addition to the appetizer buffet, shrimp cocktail and hummus.

Back in the main area, the place was hopping. Stony Ridge winery’s table had a steady stream of sweet wine fans. Other tables featured Meiomi Pinot Noir, Wild Horse, Joel Gott and other varietals. We had met wine rep Dave Weiden back at an early Charmed and Cherished Event, and he returns as an annual supporter. It was good to see him, and he was pouring a fabulous and popular selection of Chalk Hill Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sebastiani Zinfandel, Guenoc Claret, and Lost Angel Moscato. The very generous Heidelberg Distributing Company donated all wine for the event.

Proceeds benefit the Cherished Friends of Ahava’s Special Guest Program that provides spa and wellness services, at no charge, to men and women undergoing cancer treatment. Cherished Friends of Ahava, a non-profit organization based in Toledo, has provided services to more than 1,200 special guests in the last 12 years. This year’s event was held in memory of Mary Elizabeth Hammond.

Toledo Exchange Club Scores With Fine Wines And A Charity Boost

Each year the Exchange Club of Toledo Annual Wine Tasting continues to unite wine lovers with a great charitable cause. With a swanky setting and top flight wines, it makes for just the right blend of fundraising and fun.

Wine and Education

Last weekend was the 4th Annual Exchange Club of Toledo Wine Tasting. We wouldn’t dare miss it for a couple of reasons. First, it is a fun event at the historic Oliver House and secondly, the Cabinator (a member of our TWAV tasting team) is the organizer and his wife Glorious T is the top official with The National Exchange Club. The money raised helps support the Toledo Exchange Club’s youth scholarship program. And, did I mention the wine?

The soiree featured wines from Wine Trends with an international flair. While guests mingled, sipped wine and noshed on tasty appetizers, they could also buy tickets for the “wall of wine,” bid on silent auction items or just chat with interesting people.

The first featured wine was the Colomé Torrontes from Argentina. Torrontes is a crisp white and an underappreciated grape in the US. In Argentina it is the signature white wine. Colomé is a favorite winery of ours and produces a stellar reserve Malbec. The Torrontes was a great opener, with refreshing, light citrus flavors.

My wife, the Green Dragon, loves Sauvignon Blanc, so the next wine was right down her alley. The Mouton Cadet White Bordeaux is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. It has flavors of lime and grapefruit and a tart finish minus the teeth-shattering acidity of some Sauvignon Blanc wines.

Never Miss A Toledo Wines and Vines Post – Click To Subscribe

With moderation always in mind (wink, wink) I bypassed the Moscato, which I heard was good, and moved directly into the reds. Next on the wine menu was Santa Ema Reserve Merlot, another winner from Argentina. This is a wine that scores with rich, beautiful berry flavors and amazing value. Some of the guests tried the Santa Ema and decided to drink only that the rest of the evening.

My Pick Of The Night

In the interest of journalism, I pressed on. In my glass next was the Vina Eguia Rioja Reserva. To me, this was the wine of the night – a dynamite Tempranillo from Spain’s most famous region. The wine is complex with elegant red fruit flavors liberally laced with vanilla notes. The Vina Eguia is aged for 24 months in French and American oak and is a ruby red color.

Somewhere between the Rioja and my last wine, I ended up bidding on and winning a wine dinner in the silent auction. To savor my auction win, I celebrated with a glass of The Count from California’s Buena Vista Winery. This is a unique Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel blend with an explosive rush of flavor.

Cheers to the Exchange Club of Toledo for another outstanding event. Fine wine and supporting a worthy cause is a pairing we really appreciate.

Boisset Collection Shines At Toledo Exchange Youth Scholarship Wine Tasting

The Toledo Exchange Club Youth Scholarship benefit wine tasting made was held for the third time last week. It’s marked by good times, good wines and a good cause.
This year’s event returned to the Historic Oliver House in Toledo. The historic lobby’s unique circular layout makes it an ideal venue for this tasting. The event was organized by tasting team member The Cabinator. No way we would miss this tasting!
Highlighting the benefit were the wines of the Boisset Collection, courtesy of Wine Trends. Jean-Claude Boisset was born in Burgundy and continued his parents’ wine tradition. He developed the Boisset US business and today Jean-Claude and his sister Nathalie have united the old and new worlds of wine with wineries in both France and California.
Featured wines included:
  • 2012 Fortant Chardonnay, Languedoc, France
  • 2013 DeLoach Pinot Noir, California
  • 2011 Bonpas Cotes du Rhone, France
  • 2012 Buena Vista Founders Red Blend “The Count,” Sonoma
  • 2012 Raymond Family Classic Cabernet Sauvignon, California
  • Batasiolo Moscato, Italy
The lineup was solid throughout. For many years, Languedoc has been known for the volume of wine produced, and not necessarily the quality. That is all changing. The Fortant is a solid Chardonnay with notes of tropical fruit.
For tasting team member Glorious T, DeLoach her “go to” Pinot Noir. DeLoach has many tiers of Pinot, but this is a tasty example of California Pinot that is balanced with great strawberry and and red fruit flavors.
Cotes du Rhone is one of our favorite wines. The blend of Syrah and Grenache (and in this case Mourvedre too) is easy drinking and goes with a variety of dishes. It is warm and powerful with black fruit and a touch of spice.
A special treat was the Bonpas Luberon. This is a white blend of Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Clairette and Vermentino that wasn’t on the tasting list – but Wine Trends special guest Miana DeGardeyn shared a taste. This is a deliciously fresh white with good acidity and peachy flavors. My favorite white of the night.
One of the top reds of the evening was the 2012 Buena Vista Founder’s Red, “The Count.” We were looking forward to tasting this since Buena Vista’s Sheriff, a Petite Sirah blend, is one of our favorites. The Count is a Zinfandel blend that includes Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Carignane.
The wine honors the innovative founder of the Buena Vista Winery and the blend does him proud. In addition to luscious fruit, there are threads of mocha, cinnamon and vanilla. A top pick!
Raymond Vineyards is known for delivering excellent Cabernet Sauvignon at a variety of price points. Whether you are tasting the R Collection or their premium Generations lines, you are getting great value. The Family Classic Cabernet blends grapes from Napa Valley, Sonoma and Lake County It also includes small amounts of Merlot and Petit Verdot to round out the mix.
It has blackberry and currant flavors. It’s an example of a fruit forward, ready to drink California Cab.
For a final treat, Miana shared the 2012 Raymond Napa Valley Reserve Merlot. This was the top red of the evening. It’s robust and structured without being overly tannic. It has flavor notes of currant and plum and a sophistication that leaves simpler Merlot in the dust.
For one evening, France, California and Toledo, Ohio, united to help some very deserving students. Cheers!

Glass City Wine Festival Makes Triumphant Return

The Glass City Wine Festival held its third annual event last weekend. If our intuition is correct, it will be around for many, many years to come.
Last year the festival made a major stride forward, upgrading the food and the décor. Improvements continued this year with a larger space and a live jazz band. Of course the main attraction was Ohio wineries, and 20 of them were on hand.
Green Dragon and I were joined by tasting team members Cabinator and Glorious T. We were lucky enough to get VIP tickets which allowed us to enter an hour earlier than regular tickets. We’re glad we had them and I’d recommend them highly for you next year.
The wines veer toward the sweet side of the spectrum. There were strawberry, blackberry, dandelion and pomegranate joining the more traditional ranks of Merlot, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc.
One of our favorite booths was Chateau Tebeau. We sampled and enjoyed their Cab Franc and their Pinot Gris. This year I was focused mainly on the whites and was able to enjoy Mon Ami’s Gerwurztraminer and Hillside Winery’s Traminette.
A couple other notable stops were Klingshirn (loved their Chambourcin) and It’s Your Winery, which offered a nice Pinot Noir.
A nice addition this year was a presentation by Pairings: Ohio’s Wine & Culinary Experience. Pairings is a showcase for Ohio wines and wine education and is located in Geneva. We sat in on a short sensory wine tasting which was different and enjoyable.
We went light on the food, since we were going to dinner at Registry Bistro afterward, but munched on some very good lobster mac and cheese from Rosie’s and taste-tested the cheese from Yancey’s Fancy. This artisan cheese from New York was delicious, especially the Champagne Cheddar and Smoked Gouda.
Thanks to the Glass City Wine Festival, the month of March is now a lot brighter in Toledo!

Elizabeth Spencer Wines Featured In Inaugural Veritas Cork & Craft Tasting

By now we hope that you know that Veritas Cork & Craft, 505 Jefferson Avenue, is open for business. It’s downtown Toledo’s hottest destination for wine, craft beer, artisan cocktails and just plain chillin.’
We got a tweet last week from co-owner Nick Kubiak who let us know that their first tasting was happening that evening. It was like Commissioner Gordon had turned on the bat signal! We dashed to the car and sped (as quickly as you can on construction-riddled I-75) to the hip new wine bar.
The featured wines were from Elizabeth Spencer, a California winery with a focus on Napa and Rutherford that has more recently ventured into Sonoma and Mendocino. The wine style is intense without being overly heavy, with pure flavors and persistent finishes.
Scott Burgess, national sales director for Elizabeth Spencer, conducted the tasting in the retail area of the wine bar. There is no Elizabeth Spencer, by the way, it is a combination of the names of partners Elizabeth Pressler and Spencer Graham.
First up was the 2013 Mendocino Proprietor Selected Sauvignon Blanc. This is a vibrant, fresh white with crisp flavors of grapefruit and lemon. What a great start to the tasting.
The 2012 Mendocino Chardonnay is fermented in stainless steel and then finished in neutral oak barrels. As a result this special cuvee is round and delicate – not overwhelmed by oak.
My pick of the whites was the 2012 Mendocino Pinot Blanc. Forty barrels were produced and each apparently is a beauty. This has layers of citrus with a pinch of flowers. There is a balancing minerality. If purity of flavor is the aim of Elizabeth Spencer, they hit a bulls eye with this wine. The SRP is only $18.50, so it is quite a bargain.
On the red side of the spectrum, we began with a superb 2011 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Black cherry flavors flow in a velvety mouthfeel. This is a delicious wine with the prominent note being dark red fruit, but with some complexity and earth tones. The grapes come from the Petaluma Gap region where ocean breezes create ideal Pinot Growing conditions. We grabbed a bottle of this for $33.50.
The 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet was the favorite of several guests at the tasting. Although a solid wine, it wasn’t my favorite. It is bright and smooth, but seemed to have less heartiness than I was expecting. Perhaps a year or three of aging will perfect it.
We were preparing to wrap up when some special bottles appeared from under the bar. That’s always a good sign at a tasting!
The first bonus wine was the 2011 Sonoma Coast Syrah. No wonder it was under the table – they only produced 13 barrels. This is a deep red wine with fruit that explodes from the glass. Smooth and rich, it is a wine with character.
We finished the tasting with the 2012 Mendocino Grenache. This was the most outstanding of the reds (although the Pinot gives close chase). A bright garnet color, flavors of raspberry roil through this medium bodied wine. It is a Grenache with finesse and bright, clear notes of red currant and traces of spice.
It was my first tasting of Elizabeth Spencer wines and they were impressive. Green Dragon and I were pleased to be part of the very first Veritas tasting. They should have had T-shirts! If you haven’t been to Veritas yet, consider this your insider tip and get a move on.

Veritas Cork & Craft Shoots For July Opening In Downtown Toledo

Right now Veritas Cork & Craft, located at 505 Jefferson in downtown Toledo, is clearly a work in progress. Wires dangle from the ceiling, a work light illuminates the dusty floor and a step ladder sits by a pile of planks that will soon form a bar top. But very soon this space on the ground floor of the historic Commodore Perry Building will be the hottest destination for Toledo wine lovers.
“We’re targeting an opening in early July,” said Nick Kubiak, who is partnering with Franz Gilis on the venture. “Our vision for Veritas is a space where people feel welcomed and comfortable in a very convivial atmosphere.”
Veritas will offer great wines, craft beers and classic cocktails. They will also offer classes for beer, wine and mixology. There will be experienced staff to help patrons navigate the selections.
The establishment will seat about 65 people between the bar, soft seating and tables. It will be laptop and tablet friendly and offer free Wi-Fi.
Nick points out that unfortunate circumstances hitting all at once have caused some area wine shops and wine bars to close. He says the time is right for a new attraction for Toledo wine lovers. “The wine scene here is like the Gobi desert,” he said. “There is not a lack of demand and not a lack of knowledge, so for the area to be so underserved is surprising.”
Veritas will feature areas for wine and beer retail, cheese, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and a brasserie eating area for smaller food dishes like tapas, cheese plates and charcuterie. When possible, the foods will be sourced locally.
Inside the palette is a warm gold lit up by large windows looking out to downtown Toledo. There is an industrial vibe thanks to steel girders that not only hold up the building, but add a degree of coolness. Wood for the bar will have history ingrained as it was milled in upstate New York for a bar in 1868.
Nick is a seasoned wine professional well known in the Toledo area. “My philosophy of wine has evolved in three distinct stages of my life,” he said. “My first experience with wine was in the classroom, so when I taste wines, I think about it in a formal sense.  I believe that wine should always be correct to where it comes from and what grape varietal(s) it’s made from.
“My second most influential experience was in Europe where I learned that wine should be enjoyed as a part of life and a compliment to meals and good times with friends.  I also learned that wines have a personality and can sometimes tell a story decades old.  I believe these stories should not only be shared but also inspire new stories to be told by those who drink that wine.
“Lastly, as a seasoned wine veteran, who has sold wine for 13 years, I believe that wines should be accessible to everyone who wants to try it.  There are so many wines in the world it can be intimidating.  But I would like to show people that wine doesn’t have to be that way.  There are great wines available at every price point and in every category.  The important thing is to try them.”
Don’t, however, ask him his favorite wine. He never picks them and doesn’t like to favor a particular region, producer or grape. He rarely buys the same bottle twice and wants to keep experiencing all that he is able.
Anticipated hours of operation are Monday through Wednesday 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM and 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM Friday and Saturday. There will be more than 400 choices of wines from around the world including all major growing appellations and grape varieties. Downtown Toledo has free street parking from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and after 5:00 PM and on weekends.  Also there is a parking lot and garage attached to the Commodore Perry Building that is open to the public.
There will be two styles of wine events. First, a weekly “flight night” potentially on Wednesday, where there will be a group tasting. The focus will be on the community and will be a great opportunity to interact and meet people. Veritas will also offer seminars on wine, mixology and beer. Nick envisions a 60 to 90 minute class on Saturday in the afternoon. It will be more note oriented and delve into the vinification of the wine and why it tastes the way it does. He hopes to Skype in winemakers.
Veritas is also is applying to become a chapter house for the US Bartender Guild. This will be an opportunity for professional education and networking for area bartenders.
Right now there is equipment to install, floors to polish and a myriad of to do items before Veritas Cork & Craft swings open its doors. Toledo area wine lovers can’t wait until the first bottle is uncorked!
