Exchange Club of Toledo Sets 5th Annual Wine Tasting February 25

Members of the Exchange Club of Toledo will host a wine tasting with paired appetizers at the historic Oliver House in downtown Toledo 6:00 – 8:00 PM Saturday, February 25.

The event will benefit their Youth of the Year and Accepting the Challenge of Excellence scholarships. Both scholarships benefit seniors in high school from our area with monetary scholarships for either being an exceptional student and young citizen or overcoming a life changing obstacle and achieving success. The Exchange Club works with students from the TPS system.

The event promises tasty wines and food pairings in a comfortable, historic downtown setting. There will be several irresistible silent auction items, the famous “wall of wine” and the company will be just right.  Tickets are $50 per person. The Oliver House is located at 27 Broadway St Toledo. At 150 years old, the pre-Civil War hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Oliver House is currently the home of a number of Toledo favorites, including Maumee Bay Brewing Co. and Rockwell's Steakhouse.

Charmed and Cherished Wine Tasting Continues Tradition of Good Times and Compassion

The Cherished Friends of Ahava’s Charmed and Cherished Wine Tasting Event has been a favorite tradition for the Toledo Wines and Vines team since it began 12 years ago at Cousino’s Navy Bistro at the Docks. Since that time, the team has only missed a couple of the annual events, and it has grown to over 400 people filling Fifth Third Field’s suite level space.


We have met some great people along the way, and the supporters of the Cherished Friends of Ahava generally have a personal connection, and are a dedicated and enthusiastic group of people.

They have the coordination of this event down to a smooth and efficient production. The array of silent auction and basket raffle items was impressive, with many sought after items, including Ohio State memorabilia, spa treatments, gift cards, and vacation packages. Glorious T was unfortunately outbid on the oil painting of “your favorite pet”. A new carnival-like feature, “Ring Around the Wine” was a fun addition. For $5 you could throw a ring and win the bottle your ring landed around.


The buffet appetizer included a variety of tasty and savory options, along with an area of mini desserts. The food was substantial for those who were there to really sample the wines. The cost of $50 was a fair price. For sponsors of $100 or more, a “reserve” wine tasting was available. This had changed from a Reserve tasting of interesting wines to a small selection of mass market wines. The sparkling wine table included Piper Sonoma Brut, La Marca Prosecco, and a unique Rosa Regale sparkling red wine.

Meanwhile, Sara was featuring Mondavi Cabernet, La Crema Chardonnay, Davis Bynum Pinot Noir, and a very mineral focused Chateua Thunevan white Bordeaux. Sponsors also had, in addition to the appetizer buffet, shrimp cocktail and hummus.

Back in the main area, the place was hopping. Stony Ridge winery’s table had a steady stream of sweet wine fans. Other tables featured Meiomi Pinot Noir, Wild Horse, Joel Gott and other varietals. We had met wine rep Dave Weiden back at an early Charmed and Cherished Event, and he returns as an annual supporter. It was good to see him, and he was pouring a fabulous and popular selection of Chalk Hill Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sebastiani Zinfandel, Guenoc Claret, and Lost Angel Moscato. The very generous Heidelberg Distributing Company donated all wine for the event.

Proceeds benefit the Cherished Friends of Ahava’s Special Guest Program that provides spa and wellness services, at no charge, to men and women undergoing cancer treatment. Cherished Friends of Ahava, a non-profit organization based in Toledo, has provided services to more than 1,200 special guests in the last 12 years. This year’s event was held in memory of Mary Elizabeth Hammond.

Mobile Meals Wine Gala Set November 7 At Parkway Plaza

It’s considered the premier wine event in the Toledo area. Don’t miss the Mobile Meals Wine Gala. The reservation deadline is coming up soon.
The 28th Annual Wine Gala to benefit Mobile Meals of Toledo is scheduled 6:00 PM Saturday, November 7, at Parkway Place, 2500 Parkway Plaza, Maumee. The event will feature wine tasting and appetizers, a sit-down dinner and an auction of fine wines. The black-tie optional event will also feature a silent auction, raffle and entertainment.

This is the premiere wine event in the Toledo area! Not only is the event outstanding, but it benefits a very worthy cause. In 2014, the Gala netted more than $83,000 to support the Mobile Meals’ Home-delivered Meal Program and Weekender Program. Last year, Mobile Meals delivered 460,685 meals to clients in their homes, and 1,600 children received bags of food each weekend during the school year. The agency also provided more than $177,500 in assistance to clients who could not afford the fee for their meals, which allows them to stay in their own homes.

Dinners, Benefits Highlight Upcoming Toledo Area Wine Calendar For March, April

Toledo area wine lovers have several events to circle on the calendars during the months of March and April. Two wine dinners and two benefits are among activities scheduled during the next 30 days.
First, don’t forget about the Toledo Exchange Club Youth Scholarship Wine Tasting benefit, which takes place Thursday, March 19, 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the historic Oliver House in Toledo. The cost for the event is $50 which includes wine tasting and paired appetizers. Wines, appetizers, silent auction items and raffle tickets are all available during a night of fun in benefit of Toledo area high school students.  Call (419) 343-2426 for tickets and information.
On March 30, Registry Bistro, 144 N. Superior St., (419) 725-0444, is hosting an Old World Wine Dinner. The seven course meal will begin with “bubbles” at 6:00 PM. The cost is $70 per guest. Call for reservations because limited seats are available. Don’t miss this event at one of Toledo’s finest restaurants.
Speaking of great restaurants, one of our favorites has scheduled a special wine dinner. TREO Restaurant, 5703 Main St., Sylvania, (419) 882-2266 is hosting their Spring Fling Wine Dinner on April 7. The elegant evening features wine pairings and a special menu celebrating the fresh and flavorful tastes of spring. The cost is $75 per person. Call for reservations or email events@treosylvania.com.
A event is scheduled April 18 to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Wine, Cheese & Chocolate is scheduled 7:00 to 10:00 PM at Belmont Country Club, 29601 Bates Road, Perrysburg. Toledo Youth Scholarship Wine Tasting Set March 19

The Exchange Club of Toledo will host its 3rd Annual Toledo Youth Scholarship Benefit Wine Tasting on Thursday, March 19. The event will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the historic Oliver House, 27 Broadway, Toledo.

The cost for the event is $50 which includes wine tasting and paired appetizers. Wines, appetizers, silent auction items and raffle tickets are all available during a night of fun in benefit of Toledo area high school students.  Proceeds support the Exchange Club of Toledo's Youth of the Year scholarship and ACE award programs for local high school students.
The Exchange Club is a national service organization which was founded and is headquartered in Toledo. The organization, which has more than 650 clubs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, focuses on family, community and country.
We’ve attended this program each year and it has been a blast. We encourage you to come out, have fun and support a good cause while enjoying some great wine.

Cherished Friends of Ahava To Host 10th Annual Wine Tasting May 1

It’s a new date and a new venue – but the same great cause. The Cherished Friends of Ahava 10th Annual Wine Tasting will be held 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, May 1, at Fifth Third Field - Suites Level, 406 Washington Street, in Toledo. This fabulous event benefits the Cherished Friends of Ahava and its non-profit special guests program.
Through the program, more than 950 men and women undergoing cancer treatment have enjoyed a day of pampering and relaxation at the Ahava Spa and Wellness Center at no charge. The program caters to those who are newly diagnosed or currently in treatment for cancer.
Attendees can sample more than 40 wines, appetizers, and desserts. A silent auction is part of the fun. The cost is $45 per person and $55 per person for the reserve tasting. For tickets and details call (419) 241-5877.

Black And White With A Splash of Red A Tasteful Success

Readers of this blog know that Green Dragon is my wife and member of the TWAV tasting team. She’s usually front and center in our adventures and is occasionally the target of a humorous (in my opinion) story.  Green Dragon also is a volunteer for the Red Cross.

She recently attended a wine pairing dinner to benefit the Northwest Ohio American Red Cross accompanied by friend Glorious T. Here’s her report…

The inaugural wine dinner “Black and White with a Splash of Red” was put on by the American Red Cross as a fund raiser to help support its mission of providing help to those suffering from a disaster. All funds raised will be used to support local needs. The event was a smashing success with 135 tickets sold for this exclusive event.
 
Black Diamond Nursery in Perrysburg was magically transformed into an upscale dining venue. This evening was certainly much different from a year ago when I was in the midst of floods and devastation in the wake of Superstorm Sandy in New Jersey. I served there as a disaster volunteer with the Red Cross.

Glorious T and I enjoyed the five course meal, prepared by Jim Hodulik of Stella’s Restaurant, which was expertly paired with wines from Wine Trends. Where were our husbands? They were getting sweaty and playing their league tennis instead. Our table was #7, and it proved to be an entertaining mix of characters who were happy to provide feedback on the wines as they were poured.

Fortant Chardonnay and Cabernet were served with appetizers which included smoked chicken breast atop pate de fois gras, fresh mozzarella with sundried tomato cecina and seared Ahi-tuna Nicoise salad. One of our favorites was the fresh and tasty Vitiano Bianco, an Italian white 50/50 blend of Verdicchio and Vermentino. This was paired with roasted Cornish hen topped with tangerine lemongrass. It was a delicious dish, but those hens have a lot of small bones.
 

The favorite on the red side was Fattoria Rodano Poggialupi, a red wine from the Chianti Classico vineyard of Fattoria Di Rodando. The owner, Enrico Pozzesi, was present and introduced this wine. The wine is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet and Merlot. This is a wine is bursting with berry and cigar flavors.
 
It’s great to make new friends while supporting a very worthy cause.

Black & White with a Splash of Red Wine Event on November 3 to Benefit NWO Red Cross

The American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio is hosting an unique wine tasting
event, Black & White with a Splash of Red presented by the Anderson's
Charitable Foundation 5:00 to 9:00 PM Sunday, November 3. The event supports the Red Cross mission and services in our local community.
In Northwest Ohio, Red Cross volunteers are responding to a devastating house fire every day.  Red Cross provides emergency shelter, food and clothing to families that have just lost everything they own.  By supporting the event, you are helping your friends and neighbors in a time of greatest need following an emergency.  All proceeds from this event will stay in Northwest Ohio to continue our local services and programs.
Walt and Lois Churchill and Dick and Fran Anderson are the honorary
chairpersons for this unique wine tasting event featuring wines with "Old
World Flavors" from France, Spain and Italy.  Wine Trends will lead the
evening with a special presentation by Enrico Pozzesi, owner of Fattoria Di
Rodano vineyard in Italy.  Jim Hodulik, owner of Stella's restaurant will be
discussing the food pairings. 
During the cocktail hour there will be appetizers followed by a five course meal including dessert.  Each course will be paired with a specific wine that will be presented to explain the unique qualities matched for that specific dish.
The event will be hosted at Black Diamond Nursery and Greenhouse in
Perrysburg on November 3 from 5:00 to 9:00 PM.  Other activities include a
wine bottle raffle, and silent and live auctions  David Lester, a finger
style guitarist, will be playing background music for everyone's enjoyment.
Tickets are $100/person and are available online here. Only 150 tickets are available and a sellout crowd is expected, so don’t delay.

Wine and Dine Event on May 31 to Benefit Wood County Humane Society

The Wood County Humane Society Wine and Dine event is scheduled  6:00 – 10:30 PM May 31 at Olscamp Hall on the campus of Bowling Green State University. This is your chance to help the animals while enjoying an evening of delicious edibles, engaging wines, music, and fabulous auction items. Jerry Anderson returns as auctioneer for the live auction, and music will be performed by Estar Cohen and Company.
Proceeds from the Wine and Dine support homeless and abused animals in Wood County, providing care for hundreds of animals each year - from dogs and cats to horses, goats and pocket pets.
Auction items include Vera Bradley bags and accessories, salon services, massages, sports memorabilia, fine art, crafts and jewelry by area artists, K100 DJ for a day with Shores and Steele, BGSU theatre tickets, golf, and more.
The menu includes a choice of Chicken Parmesan from the Olde Country or Stuffed Portobello Mushroom, Classic Caesar Salad with Garlicky Croustade, Rosemary Roasted Redskin Potatoes, Green Beans Almondine, and for dessert, a choice of Buckeye Cheesecake -or-Lemon Poppy Seed Pound Cake with Housemade Orange Marmalade.

Wine Lovers Congregate At Ahava Benefit

The 9th Annual Charmed & Cherished benefit wine event was held April 25 bringing together wine lovers for an important cause. The event benefits the Cherished Friends of Ahava and their special guests program. Through the program nearly 900 men and women undergoing cancer treatment have been provided complimentary spa and wellness services.

It certainly is a worthwhile cause – and the wine is quite an attraction as well. More than 40 wines were poured thanks to the generosity of Heidelberg Distributing. Delicious appetizers were also available to nosh on while viewing the various raffle baskets and auction items. The Toledo Club provided an elegant setting for the several hundred attendees.

A troupe of four attended from Toledo Wines and Vines, including Green Dragon, Glorious T and the Cabinator. We opted for the special reserve tickets (for an extra $10) that provided access an extra half dozen upscale wines.

My favorite was the 2009 Spring Valley Vineyard Frederick red blend from Walla Walla Washington. This is an estate blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 7% Cab Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. The wine is rich, ripe and bursting with New World goodness. It retails for about $40.

Two other wines that merit special comment are the St. Francis Zin and the Luigi Tacchino Barbera. The St. Francis 2009 Old Vines Zinfandel is from Sonoma. This wine is a beauty with concentrated black cherry flavor and a long finish.

The 2009 Luigi Tacchino Barbera is fresh and fruity. Like many Italian wines, this is a beautiful partner with a variety of foods (try chicken or pork chops). The wine is aged in stainless steel, so there are no harsh tannins.

It’s time for one of our favorite wine tasting events! The Cherished Friends of Ahava wine tasting will be held 6:00 to 8:00 PM April 25, at the Toledo Club, 235 14th St., Toledo. This fabulous event benefits the Cherished Friends of Ahava and its non-profit special guests program.

The Cherished Friends of Ahava wine tasting will be held 6:00 to 8:00 PM April 25, 2013, at the Toledo Club, 235 14th St., Toledo. This fabulous event benefits the Cherished Friends of Ahava and its non-profit special guests program.

Central City Ministry of Toledo Schedules March Sip and Savor Wine Tastings

Three Sip and Savor events during the month of March will benefit Central City Ministry of Toledo Schools – Queen of Apostles and Rosary Cathedral campuses. The events are scheduled March 5, 12 and 21 and feature wine or beer tasting and grazing. Food is provided by The Andersons and all proceeds will benefit tuition assistance at the schools. Tickets are $25 per each event.

Each ticket includes:
• A chance to win an exciting vacation for two to Bluegreen Wilderness Club in Branson. Missouri valued at $2,200, including $1,000 for travel expenses and resort lodging for 4 days and 3 nights. Trip may be taken at any time within one year.
• Entry in a raffle for dinner for four at Real Seafood
• A chance to throw out the pre-game first pitch and four complimentary tickets to a Toledo Mud Hens game, along with a Mud Hens T-shirt and hat.
• A 10% discount* to shop at The Andersons on the evening of each event. *Some exclusions apply, including alcoholic beverages.

Exchange Club Schedules Benefit Wine Tasting Feb. 28 At Oliver House

Members of the Exchange Club of Toledo and Maumee will host a wine tasting with paired appetizers at the historic Oliver House in downtown Toledo 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, February 28. The event will benefit their Youth of the Year and Accepting the Challenge of Excellence scholarships.

Both scholarships benefit seniors in high school from our area with monetary scholarships for either being an exceptional student and young citizen or overcoming a life changing obstacle and achieving success. The Exchange Club works with students from the TPS system.

The event promises tasty wines and food pairings in a comfortable, historic downtown setting. There will be several irresistible silent auction items and the company will be just right.  Tickets are $50 per person. The Oliver House is located at 27 Broadway St Toledo. At 150 years old, the pre-Civil War hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Oliver House is currently the home of a number of Toledo favorites, including Maumee Bay Brewing Co., Rockwell's Steakhouse, the Toledo Brewing Hall of Fame & Museum and Middle Grounds Market.
