Zinful Wine Bar in Waterville Reopens for Holiday Season

The holiday season got merrier for Toledo area wine lovers this week as Joyce Franzblau, owner of Zinful Wine Bar, (419) 878-9463, 7541 Dutch Road, Waterville, announced that the wine bar will reopen for the holiday season. Zinful closed back in March, disappointing scores of patrons.
Zinful will be open in December through at least the end of January for wine tastings, wine flights, beer, and cheese, crackers, and light snacks (nuts, meats, chocolates). Nick Kubiak, formerly of Andersons and Veritas, is serving as the wine expert for Zinful during its limited engagement. Nick has extensive wine knowledge and is a well-known wine figure in the Toledo area. Zinful will be offering wine classes during January.
The announcement is welcome news after a string of closures due to the economy. Aficionado Wine and Cigars closed in Perrysburg. The Bistro at Maumee Wines closed (although the wine shop remains open and tastings are periodically scheduled). The closing of Belle Wine and Martini Lounge at Levis Commons was also recently announced.
A special holiday wine tasting is scheduled at Zinful on Wednesday, December 17, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM with Tricia Rasar from Vintner Select. The cost is $20 per person. Featured will be a nice selection of quality Champagnes, Cabernets and Ports:
* Marc Hebrart Brut Rose-Champagne
* Mousse & Fils Brut Noire Reserve-Champagne
* Sean Minor Napa Cabernet Sauvignon-Napa
*Elyse Tietjan Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon-Napa
*Kopke 2007 LBV Port
* Kopke 20 Year Tawny Port
On Thursday, December 18, Maggie Smith of Wine Trends will be the special guest for a tasting of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The tasting will also be from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. For beer lovers, a Maumee Bay Brewery Tap takeover is scheduled on Saturday.
Zinful will be closed on Sundays, but will be open the rest of the week into January (with the exception of Christmas Day and New Years Day). Their Facebook page carries full information on events and hours.
It’s time to visit an old friend for the holidays: Zinful Wine Bar!

Zinful Wild Game Dinner To Feature Wine and Beer; Benefits Dave Thomas Foundation For Adoption

Zinful Wine Bar & Restaurant, (419) 878-9463, 7541 Dutch Road, Waterville, continues its series of wine dinners with what is certain to be an outrageously good wild game dinner. The restaurant is teaming up with area Wendy’s to present a benefit for the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption on Wednesday, November 28.
The event will be a pairing of artisanal cuisine featuring wild game and a selection of fine wine, beer and cigars---carefully chosen from Zinful’s extensive wine collection and humidor. All proceeds from ticket sales and live and silent auctions will be donated to the foundation.
This year November is National Adoption Month and this event is an opportunity for Zinful, a locally owned business, to show its appreciation for the Toledo area community by contributing to an organization that has a worthy cause. The Dave Thomas Foundation works to align children from foster care with safe, loving and permanent families. Through its efforts, the foundation has matched over 5,000 children with families and facilitated the adoption of over 3,000.
Attendees will experience a five course gourmet meal prepared by executive Chef Javan Robison, featuring exotic items such as elk and wild boar. “Javan does a phenomenal job preparing these exotic ingredients.” said Zinful owner, Joyce Franzblau, adding, “We picked out each wine and beer to compliment the bold and one-of-a kind flavors of each of Javan’s creations.”
Accompanying the dinner and tasting, those attending will have the opportunity to bid on cigar and wine gift sets, as well as other items that have been donated by area businesses. This benefit will be an excellent kick-off for the holiday season and an opportunity to support the community.
The event will be held November 28 at 6:30 P.M. Tickets are $85 per person, to be purchased in advance by calling (419) 878-9463 or email joyce@zinfulwine.com . Additional information can be located on http://www.zinfulwine.com or at Zinful’s Facebook page.

Zinful Delights With Inaugural Wine Dinner

If Zinful Wine Bar and Restaurant’s inaugural wine dinner is any indication, there are going to be a lot of happy and well-fed wine lovers in the Toledo area. The Waterville wine bar hosted a French Fusion wine dinner last week that married five of Chef Javan’s wonderful creations with French wines from Vintage Wines.

The wine dinner was the first launched since long-time wine guru Mike Gregg took over as Zinful’s wine manager. Mike says he plans to make the dinner a monthly affair, most probably the last Wednesday of the month.

The first course was roasted cod with pink peppercorns, sweet potato puree, micro salad and vanilla white wine sauce. The puree was superb. This was matched with the 2011 Joseph Drouhin la Foret Bourgogne, a classic French white Burgundy (Chardonnay) with citrus and elegance.

A Marc Bredif 2010 Chinon (Cabernet Franc) accompanied the second course of quail with caramelized brussel sprouts, apple jus, and black garlic fig chutney. Yes, it was as amazing as it sounds. The “micro-wings” went well with the rustic cherry and pepper of the wine.

For our seafood course we had grilled prawns with prosciutto chips, potato corn cake and lobster jus. This dish was a work of art, elegantly displayed and a treat to consume. The crisp prosciutto chip was a great addition. The Delas 2009 Cotes du Rhone paired nicely with this dish and was one of our favorite wines. This Syrah-Grenache blend from Southern Rhone is high on the QPR (quality price ratio) scale with big raspberry and blackberry flavors.

The fourth course was petite filet with roasted garlic potatoes, haricot vert served with a red onion reduction that Chef Javon had been simmering for most of the day. I would have gladly paid the $50 price of the meal for this dish alone with the accompanying 2009 Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This is an entrancing wine blending Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. We had a chance to savor a bottle at the Rose and Thistle and were blown away with it then.

Sadly, the wine dinner had to end, but it did so on a high note. We enjoyed a tasty apple tart with caramel and whipped cream. The pairing was a  2009 Yalumba Wrattonbully Late Harvest Botrytis Viognier. Mike explained that although this was a Australian wine, it was using a French grape.

This dessert-style wine features grapes that are hand-picked and left to harvest after they have the “noble rot” of botrytis. The botrytis fungus removes much of the water from the grapes and leaves behind a higher concentration of sugar, fruit acids and minerals. This sweet wine had flavor notes of peaches and crème Brule.

Scoring very high marks for enjoyment, great food and tasty wines, we hope this is the first of many wine dinners at Zinful. This is a sure winner for wine lovers and foodies alike.

Zinful Wine Bar Provides A Taste of Unusual Italian Grapes March 14

Looking for a wine off the beaten path? Zinful Wine Bar & Restaurant, (419) 878-9463, 7541 Dutch Road, Waterville, is hosting a wine tasting featuring unusual grapes 6:30 – 8:30 PM Wednesday, March. The cost is $20 per person and includes food pairings.

Included in the tasting are:

1. Taburno Falanghina – From the Campania region. A white that has a floral/stone fruit nose with good acidity and expressive fruit on the palate. Unoaked.

2. Boccadiggabia Rosso- From the Marches region- A blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano. This is old world wine making at its best. Earthy , cherry flavors with mild tannins. The ultimate pizza/Pasta wine.

3. Castel Santa Lucia Vigna del Melograno Rosso- From the Puglia region. Made from the indigenous grape variety Troia. More old school style with bracing acidity and spice and an earth mouth-feel.

4. Terre Nere Etna Rosso- From Sicily. This could be the most interesting red wine made in the region. The Nerello Mascalese grape comes from the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna. It has the body ,color and aroma of a red Burgundy but with the finish and taste of Nebbiolo.

Champagne Day at Zinful, It’s Not Real Unless It’s French

On Friday we decided to have dinner at Smedlap Smithy in Waterville and then cap it off with some wine at Zinful just a couple of minutes away.
Green Dragon reminded me it was Champagne Day. She had seen it on the TWAV Facebook page and posted it would be a good day to have some Cava. Interesting logic!
I pointed out that Champagne isn’t just a generic term for sparkling wine and, in fact, that’s one of the reasons why Champagne Day was started. The Champagne Bureau states that more than 50 percent of sparkling wines in the US are mislabeled “Champagne.” Champagne Day was started to “celebrate authentic Champagne and raise awareness about the need to protect the Champagne name by blogging, tweeting and commenting on all things Champagne – which as you know, can only come from the Champagne region in France.” In fairness, there are some US producers who have been making Champagne in the traditional method for more than a century and have been “grandfathered” in.
Green Dragon knows all this about Champagne, but actually likes Cava more. As it turns out, the Cava she wanted at Zinful wasn’t available, so she had a very nice split of Moet & Chandon Imperial – a true French Champagne. In the photo you can see Zinful’s Michelle Brossia serving it up along with our tasty pumpkin torte.
