Cabernet Is King At Maumee Wines Tasting
the Maumee Wines website anyhow – and sure enough, they had a big, beautiful Cabernet tasting scheduled.
Although the bistro wine bar, which we really enjoyed, has closed. The retail wine shop remains open. And they continue to host monthly wine tastings.
It was Friday after a long work week, so Green Dragon and I met the Cabinator at Maumee wines and prepared to “wine down.” The tasting featured six Cabernets (or blends) with appetizers for $25.
The first Cab was Montes 2011 Classic Series Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile. This wine goes for $11.99 This is a super value. Comes out a bit edgy but then smoothes deliciously. Good fruit.
Next we delved into the Hedges 2011 CMS, a blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah from Washington State’s Columbia Valley. This has nice loose tannins and is highly drinkable (especially on Friday night!) but left me unimpressed. Not enough structure to make it interesting. Goes for $13.99.
and pour” wine. It was a favorite of Green Dragon who rated it twice as good as several of the other wines. Cost is a modest $19.99.
We finally entered the Cab country of California with the Eberle 2009 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a beauty of a wine. It is a mulberry color with loads of complexity. Tannins enhance the great flavors. It’s a wine that will pair wonderfully with meat dishes.
The Cabinator crowned the Eberle as his favorite of the evening. The cost is only $19.99, so you can live large while not putting a hurt on the wallet. I must agree that for the price, it is a great deal – but to see what bottle I bought, you’ll have to read on.
I have always enjoyed wines from Blue Rock winery – their Cabernet is outstanding and their Baby Blue is an incredible smooth sipper. We’ve enjoyed it on several occasions. Tonight we tried the new vintage, the Blue Rock 2012 Baby Blue from Napa.
Every fireworks show has a grand finale. For us it was the Burgess 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Burgess is one a long-time Napa winery and the flavor profile is what has made Napa famous for decades. It is a great food wine with firm tannins and refined cherry flavors. Burgess is a smooth wine that can compete with wines twice its price. It tips the scales at $34.99, not bad for a big time Napa Cab!
The evening was enjoyable for several reasons: we tried some great wine, met new friends and discovered that Maumee wines is alive and kicking. Keep your eyes open for their tastings on the third Fridays of the month.

Churchill’s Schedules “Dramatically The Greatest Wine Seminar We Have Ever Had” Sunday, May 11
French wine from the left bank Bordeaux wine region of Pauillac (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
In what Wine Manager Austin Beeman terms “dramatically the greatest wine seminar we have ever had,” Walt Churchill’s Market, 3320 Briarfield. Maumee, (419) 794-4000, will focus attention on the world’s premier wine region – Bordeaux, France – and taste some of its greatest wines.
The wine seminar 100 Point Perfection from Pontet Canet and 1996 Mouton Rothschild will be held 6:00 – 8:30 PM Sunday, May 11. The cost is $150 per person and it is limited to 20 participants.
Pontet Canet is the only organically-certified wine among the Great Growths of Bordeaux and in 2009 and 2010 Pontet Canet did the impossible. Robert Parker, arguably the world’s most important wine critic, gave Pontet Canet a perfect 100 out of 100 points for back-to-back vintages. Seminar participants will taste both wines side-by-side.
How do you follow up on that? Well – great Bordeaux is meant to be consumed with lots of bottle age, so also on the tasting menu is the elite First Growth Mouton Rothschild from the glorious 1996 vintage.
The tasting group will be joined by Importer/Distributor Mark Maher of Cutting Edge Selections who will be bringing a nice surprise as well.
Here’s more about the featured wines:
1. Pontet Canet 2009 Pauillac - $349.99 - 100 points, Robert Parker. "An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically - a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. ...This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009."
2. Pontet Canet 2010 Pauillac - $349.99 – 100 points, Robert Parker. "An absolutely amazing wine, ... It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux...An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richness and extract are simply remarkable to behold and experience... it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this. ...Is there anything that proprietor Alfred Tesseron is not doing right? Talk about an estate that is on top of its game! "
3. Mouton Rothschild 1996 Pauillac - $999.99 - 96 points, Wine Spectator. Incredible nose of ultra-ripe fruit, it's yet subtle and complex. Full-bodied, with very ripe fruit and a long, long caressing finish. Superb. This is edging out the 1995.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2010.
The seminar must be paid in advance and the registration is non-refundable. For more information, contact Wine Manager Austin Beeman at austin.beeman@waltchurchillsmarket.com or call the store at (419)794-4000 and speak to either Austin or Jim Krusinski.

Jean Louis Chave Wines From Hermitage Focus of February 26 WCM Event
Walt Churchill’s Market, 3320 Briarfield. Maumee, (419) 794-4000, has scheduled a not-to-be-missed event for lovers of great French wine. An Evening with Master Sommelier Matt Citriglia and the Wines of Jean Louis Chave is scheduled 6:00 to 8:30 PM Wednesday, February 26, 2014.
The cost is $75.00 per person. The event is limited to 20 people. Wine Manager Austin Beeman said the tasting is filling up rapidly, so our suggestion is to call right away to lock in your place. You must prepay to reserve your place and the fee is non-refundable. The tasting starts promptly at 6:00.
Matt Citriglia is one of only 211 Master Sommeliers in the world and helped create the new Certified Sommelier Exam. His knowledge and expertise will make the event special indeed.
World-renowned wine authority Robert Parker says, “Jean Louis Chave is a small, but world-class wine enterprise that is truly inspiring. The Chave family have been doing this since 1472.”
The key to success has been perfectionist organic/biodynamic farming, low yields, full ripeness, minimal new oak, minimal intervention, and no filtering. This is the result of five generations of high quality winemaking and respect for their terroir. The Chave family could easily be called the royal family of French Wine.
Wines scheduled to be tasted are:
- 2009 Hermitage BLANCHE – “A magic, exciting white” –Gary Vaynerchuk
- 2010 Hermitage Blanc – 99pts Wine Spectator. “France’s Greatest Wine!”

Iconic Cabernet Tasting Rocks Wine Lovers at Walt Churchill’s Market in Maumee
Last Saturday I offered to help tasting team member The Cabinator with some chores at his new house. He and Glorious T had just moved to a beautiful new home, but the strain was beginning to show. It’s not easy to coordinate selling a house, moving all your belongings and trying to juggle work responsibilities at the same time.
I was ready to roll up my sleeves and pitch in on a long workday. But The Cabinator indicated there was a problem. Austin Beeman had scheduled the Mother of All Cabernet tastings at Churchill’s in Maumee. We would work on the important task of assembling a coffee table, but quickly then shoot out to WCM in Maumee. The Cabinator needed his “medicine.”
You know, I love delicate wines with floating flavors of spring flowers, rare spices and wafts of faint sea breezes (pinky is raised!). And then there are times where I just want Cab, real CAB that coats the palate and satisfies the soul -- Cabernet Sauvignon with power from cork pop until the last drop.
The lineup for Churchill’s Iconic Cabernet Tasting was impressive and seemed to fill the need:
- Cakebread Cellars 2009 Cabernet
- Chimney Rock 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stag’s Leap
- Chateau St. Jean 2010 Cinq Cepages
- World’s End 2009 Good Times, Bad Times Cabernet, To Kalon Vineyard
- Robert Mondavi 2009 Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet
- Opus One 2010
From the first sip, it was an outrageously good tasting. Cakebread Cellars was a clear trumpet call announcing Napa Valley goodness. I have become a real fan of Chimney Rock since selecting it for a board meeting dinner more than a year ago. Stag’s Leap is an impressive wine region producing perhaps the best Cabs in Napa Valley. It’s well worth the $140 price tag.
I had heard about Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages, but never had the chance to taste it until now. This is a blend using all five of the traditional Bordeaux grapes. It has dark berry flavors mixed with delicious chocolate.
The showstopper for us was the World’s End Good Times, Bad Times To Kalon Vineyard Cab. When you have a wine named after a Led Zeppelin tune, it better be something that rocks – and it did! I was surprised that I had never heard of World’s End, but Austin explained that it is a relatively new winery headed by Bordeaux winemaker Jonathan Maltus.
The grapes come from the legendary To Kalon Vineyard. There were no “bad times” with this World’s End Cab. The flavors were supple and rich blackberry with currants. The finish was unceasing. It really is one of the best Cabs I’ve tasted – and a good bargain at $100.
Many people evaluate Mondavi wines on their mass market wines, but have no idea that Mondavi’s upper echelon wines are superb. The Robert Mondavi 2009 Napa Valley Reserve is beautifully balanced with flavors of black cherry, earth and bit of smoke. A top wine for sure, but at $135 it did not outshine the World’s End.
Radiating its awesomeness over the entire tasting was the closing act: Opus One 2010. Opus One was America’s first ultra-premium wine when it debuted in 1984 as a partnership between Chateau Phillippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Back then it sold for the outrageous price of more than $50 a bottle. Today it sells for $240. A two-ounce sample at the tasting cost $25.
This is a wine that is just about perfect. It glides over the tongue with a velvety texture. Blackberry and coffee flavors swirl with just a hint of herbs. This is a wine that delights the soul.
When the final drop was drained we scoured the shelves for a purchase. Our wallets were a bit drained too by the cost of the tasting, so we each grabbed a bottle of the World’s End If Six Was Nine Reserve Cabernet at a more moderate $42 cost as well as Randall Grahm’s latest wine, Bonny Doon 2012 A Proper Claret.
Each of the Cabs earns a TWAV seal of approval, but our insider tip is to prepare for “World’s End!”

Constantin Richter Scheduled at Special WCM Tasting September 23
The event starts at 6:00 PM and the cost is $20. No reservations are needed. This will be a structured tasting of sweet and dry Riesling.
The Max Ferd philosophy is that great wine comes from the vineyards the Mosel Valley in Germany, not the cellar.
The challenge of cultivating vines on the steep, slate slopes of Mosel is overcome by fastidious handwork, small crop sizes, all-natural fertilizers and sustainable farming practices. All harvesting is done by hand.
Vinification starts with gentle pressing and slow temperature controlled fermentation in traditional old oak barrels (fuders). When possible, Richter uses natural yeasts and no chemical fining agents.
